About the Canal Warehouse

The canal warehouses have been part of Coventry’s history since the 1800’s but were rebuilt in 1914. The Basin used to be a thriving part of the city with barges full of coal and other goods coming to be unloaded and distributed throughout the Midlands. They are still signs of the basins rich history with two vaults for coal storage and the weighbridge office at the top of the basin.

For decades the Canal Basin and Warehouse lay almost derelict until the 80’s, when work started to restore it to its former glory. It now hosts a diverse mix of arts and crafts based businesses.  The outside of the Warehouse remains much the same, with the inner parts turned into several studios and offices which retain many original features.
